Honoring JB Quinn: A Tribute in Rome, GA

Written by

This past week, Buglers Across America took me to Rome, Georgia, where I had the privilege of sounding Taps for JB Quinn, a dedicated U.S. Army veteran who faithfully served his country. Standing in the stillness of the cemetery, horn in hand, I reflected on the weight of these twenty-four notes—a final farewell to a man who answered the call of duty.

JB Quinn, a proud Army veteran and a longtime resident of Rome, passed away at 76. His legacy of service and dedication to his country and community is a testament to the kind of sacrifice we honor through Buglers Across America. Born in Rome Georgia, JB was a hard-working and faithful man known for his integrity and devotion to his family. After serving in the military, he built a life in Georgia, leaving cherished memories for those who knew him best.

This tribute would not have been complete without the presence of the dedicated volunteer honor guard from American Legion Post 5 of Rome, GA. Their commitment to honoring fellow veterans was evident in their precise movements, solemn salutes, and heartfelt respect for JB Quinn’s service. These men and women, themselves veterans, understand the weight of military sacrifice, and their presence added deep meaning to the ceremony. As they folded the flag and presented it to the family, the dignity of their actions spoke volumes—this was more than a ceremony; it was a moment of remembrance, gratitude, and respect.

Standing in Rome, Georgia, I couldn’t help but think of the old saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” While it often means adapting to local customs, there’s a more profound truth in it. The men and women who gathered that day—from the honor guard to the family to those of us offering our skills in tribute—demonstrated that the best kind of service is freely given. To do what is good and true, to stand for honor and sacrifice, is at the heart of what makes America great. In moments like these, as volunteers come together with no expectation of reward, we see the best of our nation’s character.

There’s something profound about playing Taps in a place like Rome, GA. The rolling hills and quiet landscape serve as a fitting backdrop to honor those who have served. Each note of Taps lingers in the air like a prayer, echoing our gratitude but often struggling to put it into words.

For those gathered, it was a moment of reflection—not just on JB’s life but on the countless men and women who have donned the uniform and taken up the call of duty. It’s a reminder that our heroes are not forgotten, that their service continues to be honored and that the sound of Taps carries their memory forward.

JB Quinn’s legacy lives on, and it was my honor to ensure that his service did not go unrecognized. May we never forget those who stood in the gap for our freedoms.

Join the Mission: Real Taps for Real Heroes

At Real Taps for Real Heroes, we believe that every veteran deserves a proper farewell—one that includes the solemn sound of live Taps and the presence of a dedicated honor guard. Sadly, too many veterans pass without receiving this tribute simply because there aren’t enough buglers and volunteers to meet the need. We need you if you are a musician who can play Taps or a veteran interested in joining an honor guard. Your service can ensure that no hero is forgotten.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please email me at matt@realtapsforrealheroes.com. Let’s make sure every veteran receives the honor they deserve.
